In the first venture between Amazon Studios and Imax, The Aeronauts, directed by Tom Harper and starring Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones, will be released exclusively in Imax theaters nationwide for a one-week run beginning October 25. The pic will then expand nationally for a full theatrical run in additional theaters on November 1.

Set in 1862, The Aeronauts follows wealthy young widow Amelia Wren (Jones) and headstrong scientist James Glaisher (Redmayne), as they mount a balloon expedition to fly higher than anyone in history. This is a journey to the very edge of existence, where the air is thin and the chances of survival are slim. As their perilous ascent reveals their true selves, this unlikely pair discover things about each other – and themselves – that helps each of them find their place in the world they have left behind.

Pic is written Jack Thorne and directed and produced by Harper. Mandeville Films’ Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman and Harper produce, and Richard Hewitt and Thorne are executive producers.

“The Aeronauts is a spectacular movie featuring emotionally engaging performances and edge-of-your-seat action,” said Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke. “We’re thrilled to join Imax in showcasing this one-of-a-kind film in such a grand format. We look forward to giving our customers an unforgettable theatrical experience high above the clouds.”

Key action sequences in The Aeronauts were designed for Imax and will feature Imax expanded aspect ratio, which means audiences will get to see up to 26% more picture than standard theaters, only in Imax.

“Today’s announcement with Amazon, which marks our first significant venture of this kind connected with a full theatrical release, is an important step in our continued effort to provide a global platform to launch diverse, premium event content every single week of the year,” said President, IMAX Entertainment, Megan Colligan. “Tom designed this movie for the IMAX screen and the result is going to blow audiences away. This film, inspired by incredible true events, offers heart-pounding intense sequences that are woven so wonderfully with the beauty, scale and emotion of these two characters go on their epic journey.”

Additional cast include Oscar nominee Tom Courtenay (45 Years), BAFTA nominee Anne Reid (The Last Tango in Halifax), BAFTA winner Rebecca Front (The Thick of It), Vincent Perez (Riviera), Tim McInnerny (Peterloo, Notting Hill), Phoebe Fox (Eye in the Sky, One Day) and Himesh Patel (Yesterday). British actress Felicity Jones takes on a new role as an advocate for women’s education with Clé de Peau Beauté

In her new film “On the Basis of Sex”, Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones plays the quietly formidable US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. For the 35-year-old Oxford University graduate, inhabiting the Notorious RBG, as Ginsburg is colloquially referred to, was somewhat of a dream role. Ginsburg’s story is a compelling tale of female empowerment.

At a time when tertiary education was considered a man’s prerogative, she earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and graduated first in her class from Columbia Law School. She spent her legal career advocating gender equality and advancing the rights of women, winning numerous victories before the Supreme Court.

It’s fitting, then, that Jones, having portrayed such a torchbearer for equality, should be the face of a new worldwide philanthropic initiative established by Clé de Peau Beauté that champions women’s education.

Power of radiance

Launched in March, the Power of Radiance Programme honours women whose work in this field has had a significant and lasting impact.

Each year the brand will select an award recipient who will receive a grant that can be donated to a cause of her choice. This year, the brand honoured Syrian refugee Muzoon Almellehan, whose work to keep Syrian girls in school has earned her an appointment as a Unicef goodwill ambassador.

British celebrities appear in a London Underground campaign promoting the benefits of struggling independent bookshops, in a new campaign created by Just a Card in partnership with Funding Circle.

Just a Card, a grassroots campaign that’s been around since 2015, vigirously champions the work of artists, designers, independent shops and businesses. The ‘Just a Book’ campaign, supported by peer-to-peer lender Funding Circle, brings together 15 of the country’s most famous faces to promote buying from standalone shops. It coincides with Just a Card day, taking place today (June 17th).

The celebrities appear on London Underground posters reading their favourite books, photographed by Charlie Gray, accompanied by the copy ‘what’s your just a book?’

Those taking part are Richard E. Grant, Felicity Jones, Hanif Kureishi, Michael Palin, Natalie Dormer, Dominic Cooper, Nathalie Emmanuel, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Hayley Mills, James Norton, David Oakes, Bruce Robinson, Greta Scacchi and Twiggy.

Sarah Hamilton, artist and founder of Just A Card, said: “Everyone loves independents and wants to support them, but often we don’t appreciate how vital each and every purchase is. Just a card, just a book, just a gift… they all add up and are critical to small business success.

“We’re challenging shoppers to think about where they spend their money, and show how much they value the independent shops that make our High Streets so special.”

Michael Palin said: “I support independent bookshops in the same way that I support independent thinking of any kind. I rejoice in what makes bookshops different. I like the quirkiness and personal touch you find in independent shops.” [Source]

As she takes on the notorious US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her latest role, Felicity Jones tells Afua Hirsch about the importance of unashamed ambition, marrying a feminist and why she’ll always be proud of her Birmingham roots

When you watch a Felicity Jones film, you may think you are being entertained. And rightly so: you’d be hard-pushed
to find someone who hasn’t enjoyed the force-of-nature performances behind her Oscar, Golden Globe and Bafta nominations – from Jyn Erso in Star Wars spin-off Rogue One
to Stephen Hawking’s unstoppable other half in The Theory
Of Everything.

But here is an actress with an agenda. ‘I’m fascinated by how culture intersects with political changes,’
Jones tells me when we meet in a brightly lit Italian cafe in central London. ‘Obviously it’s never a direct effect, but what interests me is how we shift ideology through entertainment.’

Jones, 35, has plenty of ideas about how to shift ideology.
A lifelong feminist, she wants crèches on sets as well as equal pay – she reportedly earned more than her male Rogue One co-stars. But today she is talking explicitly about her latest, and most overtly ideological, role as US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose life and career she depicts in On The Basis Of Sex.

It’s been a long time coming. But having begun her acting career aged just 12, with a long-running stint on BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers, which she later combined with an English degree at Oxford University, Jones has never been in any doubt about what she wants. ‘I spent months after Rogue One looking for a script and a story that was about an ambitious woman,’ she explains. ‘I was so sick of having the odd line here and there.
I wanted a role that was about a woman pursuing her ambitions unashamedly.’
