Find out the actress’s beauty tips, and how she transformed into the Supreme Court justice for “On the Basis of Sex.”
When it comes to her career, the actress Felicity Jones is game for taking on a range of roles, including the fierce Jyn Erso in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” and Ruth Bader Ginsburg in “On the Basis of Sex,” the biopic on the Supreme Court justice that will be out on Dec. 24.
In beauty matters, Ms. Jones, 35, is a bit less adventurous but still willing to switch up her regimen if it’s good for her sensitive skin. Raised in England, in the Bournville village of Birmingham, she now lives in London, where you may find her at her favorite yoga studio.
Skin Care
I get up and wash my face with water. Then I pull my hair back and run down to the gym. It’s the best way for waking up and putting yourself in a good mood.
When I come back, I exfoliate — I do that once or twice a week. I use a product by Caudalie that has a very fine grit. It’s not too abrasive. Or I use this cleanser by La Roche-Posay that’s amazing for sensitive skin. A lot of products do irritate my skin, so when I find something that works, I’m fairly loyal.
Then I moisturize. My skin-care game is about hydration, hydration, hydration. When you do a lot of traveling, you have to put a lot of care into your skin. Occasionally I like to have a facial because it’s incredibly relaxing, but I find it’s the day-to-day care that’s key, and that includes not too much caffeine, not too much alcohol, rest and water.
I’m an ambassador for Clé de Peau, and I use La Crème. It has a really fine texture, which I love. I use the eye cream as well. Then I do SPF — I have the one by La Roche-Posay. At night, I use the same products, but first I take off my makeup with Bioderma Sensibio micellar water. It’s fantastic — it doesn’t dry you out.

It’s hard to believe that Felicity Jones has been working in the film industry for only a decade. Since her bigscreen debut in 2008’s “Flashbacks of a Fool,” the unassuming 35-yearold has gained incredible momentum over the 20 films she’s made, effortlessly moving from English period dramas to U.S. indies, studio prestige pics and Hollywood blockbusters. Not bad going for a girl from the industrial British Midlands.
It’s this diversity and stamina that brought the actress the Variety Award at the British Independent Film Awards, an honor that recognizes a director, actor, writer or producer who has made a global impact and helped to focus the international spotlight on the U.K.
“It’s a great privilege, and I’m very flattered to be given this award,” says Jones enthusiastically on the phone from her hotel in midtown Manhattan. “I’ve had a long relationship with British independent film. It’s where I learned my craft, in many ways, so it’s wonderful. It’s very cool.”
Currently in the U.S. promoting “On the Basis of Sex,” a biopic inspired by the early career of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jones is an awards season contender for the first time since 2015’s Academy favorite “The Theory of Everything,” in which she played the wife of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, and bagged an Oscar nomination for lead actress.
“I’m a huge fan of Ruth Bader Ginsburg,” she says. “To play someone who is as extraordinary as she is, who stuck by her beliefs, who fights for equality, fights for people who sometimes feel like they don’t have a voice. I have 100% respect for her and it was an absolute privilege to play her.”
But, surprisingly, this fast-tracking to Oscar success was hardly part of a long-term masterplan. “When I started out, I had absolutely no idea,” she says. “Initially, I thought I’d just give it a go. I went to university, and then after university I thought, ‘I’ll just throw myself in. I’ll start auditioning, and if it doesn’t work out, I’ll have to think of something else.’ I never had a grand plan. I always knew that I wanted to go into storytelling in some capacity. When I was younger, I always wanted to be a journalist or work in magazines — I was fascinated by the thought of putting ideas out into the world.”

The actress on her fight for women’s equality in the new American film based on the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
Elegantly perched on a windowsill inside a gorgeous 17th-century mansion in London, Felicity Jones is soaking up the beautiful afternoon sun on the set of our DuJour cover shoot. She is poised, polite, and excited, twirling around the property’s expertly manicured gardens in couture to capture the perfect shots. “We went quite punky but elegant, so very cool,” she peppers in. Today’s ensembles consisting of feathers, corsets, and leather are a sharp right turn from her buttoned-up, collared court attire on the set of On the Basis of Sex, her highly anticipated new film, in which she plays Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. “There’s a practicality to Ruth that comes through her clothes,” notes Jones. “She doesn’t like to draw too much attention to herself, but at the same time, she likes a little flash.” There’s always a touch of her personality, as we see with her collars on the Supreme Court, proving that she’s never afraid to let her character come through. “She’s such an icon in terms of her style, and you see how she really found looks that work later in life, and she really stuck with them, like having her hair pulled back and her signature scrunchies.”
But all fashion talk aside, playing RBG was a role that Jones was aware would require an intensive amount of work in order to nail. “I knew I had a hell of a lot of research in front of me and that I wanted to do justice to the justice, so I started off reading everything I could about her, looking at every single piece of footage of her, and really getting into the mind-set of her; that was my objective.” Prepping to transform herself into Notorious RBG, the badass nickname that 85-year-old Ginsburg has earned herself, required a method to the madness. “I usually have quite an academic approach when I start off; I really try to become an expert on that person,” she says. “It was an enormous help when I met her and spent time with her and really felt her incredible humanity. She’s someone who is very private and has an innate shyness, so it was a real gift that she invited Armie Hammer [who plays her husband, Marty, in the film] and I into her home and gave us access so that we could do the best job possible of understanding her.”
Throughout the process of becoming RBG, Jones slowly started to realize the two women were alike in more ways than one. “I found many similarities in the way that I was always rather shy growing up as a young girl. I think for both of us, when we put our mind to something, we are both incredibly focused and can be very single-minded. We don’t like a lot of fuss. I’d say we’re very straightforward and diligent, and I constantly found moments where she’s giving me such reassurance in my own life. Just seeing the way she behaved and her silent strengths are something I constantly come back to and find empowering in my own life.”
