Netflix has acquired nearly all worldwide rights to “The Last Letter From Your Lover,” a romantic drama starring Felicity Jones and Shailene Woodley. Financial terms of the deal are not known, but the pact includes domestic rights.

StudioCanal, which put together the picture, will release the film in the U.K., France, Germany, Australia, and New Zealand. StudioCanal’s output partner Svensk will distribute the film in Scandinavia. The company will be selling the film in China, where Netflix does not operate.

Based on the best-selling novel by Jojo Moyes, “The Last Letter From Your Lover” is a dual-narrative love story that follows Ellie (Jones), a young journalist in contemporary London who uncovers a series of love letters recounting a star-crossed affair in the 1960s. That romance between Jennifer Stirling (Woodley) and Anthony O’Hare (Callum Turner) is so intense that Ellie becomes obsessed with finding the couple and discovering how their story ended. Moyes’ book is a favorite of many readers, having sold over three million copies worldwide.

Augustine Frizzell (“Euphoria”) is directing the film from a script by Nick Payne and Esta Spalding. The cast also includes Nabhaan Rizwan, Joe Alwyn, and Ncuti Gatwa.

Pete Czernin and Graham Broadbent of Blueprint Pictures produced the picture along with Simone Urdl and Jennifer Weiss of The Film Farm.

Jones is an Oscar nominee for “The Theory of Everything” and the star of “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” She will next be seen in the adventure film “The Aeronauts” opposite her “The Theory of Everything” co-star Eddie Redmayne. Woodley recently appeared in the second season of “Big Little Lies” and starred in “The Fault in Our Stars.” Her upcoming projects include the romantic drama “Endings, Beginnings.” Both actresses also served as executive producers on “The Last Letter From Your Lover.”

Principal photography is currently underway in Mallorca and will soon move to the U.K. A release date has yet to be announced. [Source]

Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne will be reunited on screen at this year’s BFI London Film Festival in adventure movie The Aeronauts.

The pair were both Oscar-nominated for 2014’s The Theory of Everything with Redmayne winning for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking.

This year’s festival will host the European premiere of The Aeronauts.

It tells the story of an attempt to fly a gas balloon higher than anyone has before.

It was previously been announced the 11-day long celebration of film will open and close with two other European premieres – Armando Iannucci’s The Personal History of David Copperfield and Martin Scorsese’s mob epic The Irishman, which stars Oscar winners Robert de Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci.

Other films that will be shown during the Festival include whodunit mystery Knives Out, starring Daniel Craig and Avengers star Chris Evans, and The King, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Henry IV Parts One and Two and Henry V, starring Timothée Chalamet and Robert Pattinson.

There will also be Gala Premieres of Avengers star Scarlett Johansson’s two most recent movies, the wartime satire Jojo Rabbit, where she plays the mother of a young boy whose imaginary friend is an idiotic version of Hitler, and Marriage Story where she stars opposite Star Wars actor Adam Driver in the story of a couple’s difficult break up.

The festival will screen a total of 229 features with around one in three of those coming from female film-makers representing a slight increase from last 2018’s programme.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” actress Felicity Jones will receive the Variety Award at the British Independent Film Awards ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 2.

The award recognizes an actor, director, writer, or producer who has made a global impact and pointed the international spotlight on the U.K.

“When actress Felicity Jones first appeared on your radar, you probably knew she was destined for greatness but you probably didn’t know she would impact so forcefully on all sizes of screens in all kinds of projects,” says Steven Gaydos, Variety’s vice president and executive editor.

Jones most recently starred as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the biographical drama “On the Basis of Sex.” The English actress has also been featured in numerous films over the past few years, including “Rogue One,” “Inferno,” and “The Theory of Everything,” for which she garnered Academy and Golden Globe nominations. Jones has twice been nominated at BIFA, for her performances in “Albatross” and Ralph Fiennes’ “The Invisible Woman.”

“She has infused the ‘Star Wars’ juggernaut with feminine soul as well as womanly grit, and she brought gravity and tenderness to the Oscar-winning ‘Theory of Everything,’” Gaydos continues. “Now she plays a brave woman whose life and achievements loom larger every day. ‘On the Basis of Sex’ is a rallying cry for women’s rights in a time of political crisis, but in the hands of Felicity Jones, Ruth Bader Ginsburg becomes a woman we don’t simply admire, but we come to deeply understand her drives and relish the soul that sustains her commitment to justice and equality.”

The American Film Institute (AFI) announced that the 32nd edition of AFI FEST presented by Audi will open with the World Premiere of “On the Basis of Sex,” the Felicity Jones-starring Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic directed by Mimi Leder. “On the Basis of Sex” centers around Ginsburg as a young lawyer as she teams up with her husband, Martin D. Ginsburg (Armie Hammer), to bring a case before the U.S. Court of Appeals that will overturn a century of gender discrimination. The supporting cast includes Justin Theroux, Sam Waterston, Jack Reynor, and Kathy Bates as civil liberties lawyer Dorothy Kenyon.

The Opening Night Gala screening will take place Thursday, November 8, 2018, at the historic TCL Chinese Theatre.

“AFI was founded to celebrate excellence in the art form and to ensure it for future generations,” said Bob Gazzale, President & CEO, AFI in an official statement. “‘On the Basis of Sex’ brings these dual mandates together as one — a story essential to our times and a triumph for one of the first female directors at the AFI Conservatory. It’s our honor to shine a proper light upon Mimi and this landmark film.”

Leder added in her own statement, “As one of the first women ever admitted to the AFI Conservatory, it’s particularly meaningful to me that ‘On the Basis of Sex’ will open AFI FEST 2018,” she said. “My time at the Conservatory was a life-changing experience and informed my creative journey. I am forever grateful. The origin story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, in this 25th anniversary year of her appointment to the Supreme Court, couldn’t come at a more important moment in our history nor be shown at a more relevant place than AFI FEST, a symbol of artistic integrity and the enduring power of cinema. I hope girls and young women in particular will see the film and find inspiration to realize their own unlimited potential.
